Ice, Ice Baby!

Last night, we got that ice storm that was moving across so much of the US.  I was lucky.  Although I was prepared with flashlights and candles.  I kept my phone and laptop plugged in so they'd be fully changed if I lost power.  I had several half gallon containers filled with water (I have a well that won't work if I lose power).

I think my neighbor's tree looks really cool!

I was very lucky.  I discovered in the morning that I had lost power at least once during the night, but it was on when I woke up.  I don't know if it flashed off and back on or if it was out for any length of time.  I kept my TV on in my bedroom, so I'd know if power was out.

this is what my TV looked like from 10 am until around 4 pm today.

One thing I wasn't happy about was my cable and internet were knocked out for about 6 hours today.  I do have a netbook,  but my Fios connection was lousy!  I was able to get on Facebook and read what was coming in, but I wasn't able to respond to anyone all day.  Like being gagged while all this great conversation is going on all around you!

my walkway this morning. you can see why I stayed inside all day!

As the day went on, the temperature went above freezing, to about 40 degrees and quite a bit of the ice melted away.  All morning long, I could hear loud cracks as branches fell off trees in my neighborhood.  I could also hear ice falling off the trees on my property. I had small branches fall to the ground, but nothing major.

Punxatawny Phil

In other news, Punxatawny Phil, that craft old groundhog, did not see his shadow this morning and legend has it that we'll be having an early Spring.  Yeah.  I'll believe that when I see it!  I won't be breaking out the short sleeve shirts, capris and sandals any time soon!

I just check the flashing on the microwave clock to know if the power dropped. So you have Verizon FIOS? They don't serve this area but I would have it if they did. Don't you get TV channels and internet over it?
Oh what good would your powered up laptop do if your power was out. FIOS doesn't work without the power on does it?
Too many questions?

You could break out the spring wear down here...we were at a balmy 70 degrees today. I hate it! I'm NOT finished with winter yet. At the same time, I would not survive the cold that some of you are getting...there is such a thing as too cold! Just like down here it's too hot! LOL

Glad to hear you faired the storm. Hope you have some thermal underwear to keep you warm. We are cold down here in Tucson too, well I should say cold for us. It's about 38 degrees now and going down but no snow.
Stay warm!

Stay warm, darling. I have a battery pack that stays charged. So when my power went out this morning, I plugged my internet into that battery pack, and it held a charge for 3 hours.

Voila. I had internet.

I couldn't find a freakin' flashlight, but by God, I had internet.

And I was happy.

I have battery back up for both of our computers and it rocks. Power goes out and I still have internet!! So cool!!!!! Well, at least for three or four hours. But heck...that is something is it not??
We got the ice and the snow (21 inches) and the sub zero temps as well. It totally sucks! But the sun was out and that made it bearable for a time. Then I realized I was freezing and my desire for spring washed over me like a tidal wave. Waaaaaaaaa!! I want spring!!

We were lucky and had not interrupts with this weather. It sure made the trees beautiful - if they could bear it.

I think the most amazing report I saw on the blizzard last night was a guy ice skating down the street in his neighborhood! It was a perfect ice rink (that is, ice road).

I have been horrified by what you are all enduring in the Lower 48. The ice makes it even more dangerous. Our climate is dry so we don't get the dangerous icing that you do.

We Alaskans have our winter issues (certainly) but nothing like the one you are experiencing. Glad to know you are safe at home but I agree with you, enough is enough! Stay warm Joanie and watch your step out there! xo
