Infernal Revenue Service

I just finished doing my federal tax return and I am NOT a happy camper! Last year, I got a nice $2400 tax refund, maybe even $2600, I can't really remember the exact number. I thought this year, I'd get a nice big return since I don't have to claim my divorce settlement this year. I do, however, have to claim my spousal support (PA's version of alimony). Since my ex makes a nice tidy 6 figure income and he was waaaaaaay guilty about cheating and then leaving me for a slut woman 14 years younger than me, I get a nice alimony check twice a month. But apparently I have to pay taxes on this money that I earned! I shouldn't have to pay taxes on it! It should be considered a gift, for putting up with his anal retentive ways, for making me work at his restaurant at least 50 hours a week for 6 years with no pay, for raising 3 good kids, for.... oh hell...

Sorry. Got off on one of those tangents.

Anyway, this year I'm getting a whopping $111 back on my income tax. If this was a bowling score, we'd call that a shit house. I just don't understand it. I get to deduct the 2 kids, the mortgage interest, the real estate taxes, some of Tim's college expenses, uniforms for work. Still, with all that, all I'm getting back is a shit house!

I was hoping to get caught up on bills, put money away for a little vacation this summer (my friend rents me her summer house for about $500 for a week in Ocean City, MD.. a STEAL!!), catch up on Dani's tuition... sigh

President Obama! I was told if you got elected, we wouldn't have to pay our mortgage or car payments any more ! That you were going to take care of everything for us! So when can we expect that to happen? HMMM... ?

Oh well, at least I didn't owe anything (trying to look on the bright side... and it ain't workin')

I didn't hear Obama make those promises. Crap. I would've campaigned harder if he had!

It seems insane to have to pay taxes on alimony... that money has ALREADY BEEN TAXED when you ex earned it!! Hasn't it??

Taxed on your alimony? I agree with Liz up there.

I didn't hear the promises, either, but I'm willing to take him up on them!

Good point, Ladies. I'm going to investigate this. I haven't filed yet. Just did the paperwork on turbotax online.

Liz, did you hear about the folks who were saying they didn't have to pay for mortgage or car payments because Obama was going to take care of everything? I'd love to be there when they repo her car and toss her ass out of the house! The Messiah indeed. LOL

Shit! Where was I when Obama was making those promises?

Look at the bright side, you didn't have to pay in and no one stole your kids social security numbers and used them on their tax return causing you to have to file by mail and it taking for-freaking-ever to get the money!

Good luck, Joanie. The taxing of alimony does smell funny (but the death tax is on money that's already been taxed, too, so it isn't unheard of).

I try and look on the bright side, too. At least we owe taxes at all, imagine if we didn't make enough to even get taxes taken out! Now THAT would be truly shitty. :(

I checked with my friend who does taxes and she told me beause Greg uses the alimony as a deduction, I have to claim it as income. They didn't ask me for his ss#. I wonder if they asked for mine?? hmmm.....

Doesn't surprise me about the alimony taxes since it's considered income.

But, of course, it's a tax credit for your ex. You can never win.

I'm sorry to hear that! :-( Damn taxes!

I haven't got anything intelligent or amusing to say about taxes I'm afraid. The only thing that's coming to mind is that if I got a score of 111 in bowling I'd be quite pleased. Hey, I'm pleased when I make it to triple figures. Tragic isn't it?

That dosnt seem right because thats money to help with expenses surely. Cant you claim a single parents deduction of some kind?

Maybe it's time for a professional?

Hi Joanie!

Well, look on the bright side... if you're only getting back $111 in income tax, that means the government hasn't been using gobs of your money all year. Not a great consolation, but it's the only positive I could think of.

And even though Obama didn't literally promise mortgages and car payments would cease (obviously), that was the perception of much of the lower class. Imagine their surprise.

I missed you while I was in Dallas, but I did follow your blog on my BlackBerry. Glad to be home now so I can comment.

Loved the part in your post about your ex. At least you can fume over him with humor. You're hilarious!

@Garret, I've been using Turbotax for the past umpteen years. Apparently, last year I neglected to claim my alimony which explains the $2400 refund. If I go to H & R block, I'll have to pay them $100. Two eyars ago I got $750 back but I was alsoeligible for a child tax credit that I can't get now. So I guess I just have to suck it up. At least I get to claim the mortage interest and real estate taxes!

@Alix, I knew the Obama thing was certain people mistaking his intentions. Imagine their surprise when they get tossed out and their car repo'd! And the stuff about he ex humor... might be humorous but it's all true!

and welcome back Alix!
